Excavation volume, spoil pile, net dig minus pipe, weight, and truck loads for any trench.
Enter trench dimensions. Pipe diameter is optional — leave blank for gross excavation only.
Gross vs net excavation: Gross excavation is the full rectangular trench volume (length × width × depth). If you're installing pipe, the pipe displaces some of that volume. Enter the pipe's outer diameter (in the same units as your trench) and the calculator subtracts the pipe's cylindrical volume to give you net excavation.
Spoil pile: Once you excavate bank material and pile it, it expands. Use the loose volume (25% swell) to estimate spoil pile size for equipment access and right-of-way planning.
Backfill compaction: After installing the pipe and backfilling, you'll need to compact the material. Compacted fill typically requires more volume than you'd expect — count on hauling in select fill for zone 1 bedding and haunching, and use your excavated spoil for the upper zones where spec allows.
